With pride, I take a few minutes to reflect on this rich
past. Georgetown High, which opened on January 3, 1887, with temporary space
arrangements in the Georgetown Public School, was officially opened on
January 10, 1887.
On that first day of classes, the 69 students enrolled
in the new High School were instructed by a staff of two teachers.
A new three and a half building site was purchased, and the High School
was opened in 1889. Mr. Edward J. Lennox was the architect of the
new High School. Mr. Lennox was also involved in the design of Old
City Hall, Casa Loma, the King Edward Hotel and Massey Hall, all present
historical buildings in the City of Toronto. By the year 1913, the
school had an enrolment of 120 students taught by 4 staff. The first
major renovations occurred to the High School in 1953-54 with the
construction of the West Wing. In 1958, an East Wing was added to
the structure to accommodate the growing population of the school.
In 1959, the original school building was demolished and a new building
opened in 1960. The years 1962 / 67 saw new additions of areas such
as the Resource Centre, Business and Technical areas, the Cafeteria
and Swimming pool.
In January 1970, the GDHS Board was amalgamated with the Halton Board
of Education. Since then, the Resource Centre and Music and Computer
areas have been added to the existing structure. Recent expansion
has occurred mainly to the infrastructure of the building, permitting
the expansion of the school's computer system.
With each year's Commencement, we are constantly reminded of our students
continued success in Canadian and American Universities and Colleges.
Over 124 years, the community of Georgetown has constantly changed
and Georgetown District High School has reflected this change to meet
the needs of the growing community.
